Lighting is a central component of any bathroom remodel. Ambient and task lighting make your bathroom usable, and light fixtures contribute to the bathroom's design and aesthetic.
Choosing stylish and high-quality light fixtures is one of the best ways to level up your remodel, and we've found that most homeowners prefer a modern style.
To me, this generally means clean lines and few embellishments, creating a balance of visual appeal and functionality. In this post, I'll share some examples from our portfolio of how modern bathroom lighting can contribute to an attractive and dynamic space. I'll focus specifically on vanity lights, which are typically the most visible fixtures in a bathroom.
I want to recognize up front that not everyone has the same definition of "modern." I'm not going to wade into that debate because my focus isn't on categorization or semantics. My goal is to show design ideas that can help kickstart your thinking about how to enhance the lighting for your bathroom remodel.
I'll admit that it's hard to pin down a strict definition of the modern style. That said, in my mind, modern bathroom design has certain characteristics:
Clean lines that often reflect a minimalist sensibility
Simple geometric shapes that are usually symmetrical
Sleek materials, such as brushed nickel, chrome, stainless steel, and glass
A functional approach combined with a refined look
In most cases, a modern bathroom has a cohesive aesthetic that looks polished and elegant without being too abstract or extravagant.
Modern bathroom lighting reflects these characteristics in the fixtures themselves and in the way that the fixtures fit with every other element in the room, especially the adjoining vanity and mirrors.
The most common alternatives to modern design are contemporary and traditional styles.
The contemporary style tends to be more abstract and can include things like complex shapes, asymmetry, loud color contrast, and mixed materials. You might see some clean lines in a contemporary-style bathroom, but they are juxtaposed with something like an asymmetrical mirror or an abstract light fixture.
The traditional style tends to be ornate and decorative, with curved lines and materials like bronze or brass. It has an antique look and feel that is easy to distinguish from modern design.
However, as I mentioned before, it's not always cut-and-dried. In practice, design styles can overlap, making the differences seem more subtle.
For vanity lights, modern fixtures look attractive and generate visual interest, but they aren't jarring. They offer a ton of versatility since they can fit alongside a wide range of other design touches in and around the vanity.
Another benefit of modern bathroom design is that it doesn't sacrifice function for aesthetics. A mirror with an abstract shape can look cool, but it might be tricky to use when you just need to do some basic grooming tasks.
The same goes for lighting. Your fixtures should look good, but they should also effectively illuminate your bathroom. I've found that a modern style tends to be the best at achieving both of these goals.
One of the best ways to generate ideas for your bathroom renovation is to see actual examples from other remodels. I'll go over eight examples from our portfolio that allow you to see different types of modern bathroom lighting and how different vanity lights work within the overall bathroom design.
First of all, the lights aren't tapered, so they feel a bit sleeker and more compact, which is important given the limited space. You'll also notice that this vanity has only two wall sconces since putting a third one in the middle would have looked cramped, disrupting the modern sensibility.
As in the prior example, each fixture has two light bulbs, which help provide better overall illumination and some task lighting when you're getting ready in the morning.
The mirrors have a patterned border that is a step away from strict modern aesthetics, but this just demonstrates the versatility of modern light fixtures and the ability to blend styles to create the bathroom that you like the most.
The hanging lights and hanging mirror also give this bathroom a unique style without interfering with the bathroom's sharp, clean lines.
